Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird opens in a sleepy Alabama town in the midst of the Great Depression, where Scout and her brother, Jem, live with their widowed father, Atticus Finch. Reminiscent of a bygone era, the play immerses us in a simpler time as the children play outside in the summer, act out stories and muse about their mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley. The facade of the seemingly peaceful town begins to crack when a young black man is accused of a terrible crime. Driven by an unshakeable moral conviction, local lawyer Atticus defends the man in a trial that sends violent waves through the community. Timeless and lingering, this hard-hitting work explores prejudice, compassion and the courage to do what is right.
This was a lovey adaptation of the novel. It's a moving and engaging ensemble show. I highly recommend it and hope to include it our season again in the future.
Sergel has done a masterful script of the novel -- a strong Atticus, energetic children and a nice variety of supporting characters make for a delightful production.
Excellent adaptation -- very true to novel. Easily produced.
A powerful drama with wonderful acting opportunities.
The Mockingbird script captured the humor and pathos of Harper Lee's novel while offering opportunities for theatricality in the performance. The cast was challenged by the heartfelt characterizations and the crew by the set and lighting opportunities.
A wonderful, warm, poignant story. You pulled the best sentiments of the novel into a two-hour story. I loved it.
To Kill a Mockingbird has been a great success, more so than we expected. Every performance has been sold out! This is a show everyone needs to see more than once. It teaches some wonderful lessons. Our actor who plays Tom Robinson said, "Everyone needs to see this show and be offended over and over again. It may be the only way they will learn."
Wow! I had strong misgivings about producing this show. We wondered how it would be received in rural Alabama in 2006. We sold out every performance and had to add an extra matinee (which sold out in one day).
This ranks as the favorite book and/or movie of such a large number of people that the buzz started as soon as the title was announced as part of our season. Our cast members who are accustomed to comic roles delighted in the chance to show their serious side. It was a joy from first rehearsal to final curtain.
This was by far the best show we have done. The characters were well thought out and the writing and scene changes clear and easy to follow.
A moving adaptation of Harper Lee's award-winning classic, To Kill a Mockingbird will have audiences riveted. This stage adaptation is suffused with just the right amount of humor without robbing the audience of the pathos of the subject matter.
Encourage actors to improv their moves after basic blocking - adds to the realism.
We were able to wrap some meaningful community discussions around this production and it's also an excellent show to advertise to high schools to come and see as this book is on the curriculum of most high schools.
