It is early in the morning when young Randy, dribbling a basketball and playing rock 'n roll on his jam box, saunters confidently onto a deserted playground. He is soon joined by his father, Dexter, who has come to play one last game before Randy boards the bus and tests his independence for the first time. But this is not a joyful farewell. An undercurrent of tension has plagued both men since Randy's mother left the house months before. Dexter's efforts to postpone his son's departure by telling jokes and recounting his past athletic glories fail to distract Randy, who wants to play the game and get on with his life. As the competition escalates, passions flare into a one-on-one generational war fueled by years of family friction. Dexter tries to explain the intricate nature of marriage and the stresses of living in an adult world. At the end of the game Randy leaves for adventures and places unknown, but he and his father emerge with a richer understanding of each other and life's complexities.
