Christopher Robin has decided to run away with his friends Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger and the rest. Probably they'll go to the North Pole or to the South Pole. For there is a dark, mysterious threat that he's to be sent away to Education. Nobody knows exactly what or where that is, and if he's sent to such a distant place, what can his friends possibly do without him? So it's generally agreed that they'll run away. As the situation becomes clearer, Christopher Robin isn't quite so sure that running away is the answer.
An excellent play of good length that is perfect for a group aged 10-14. The size of parts is good as well, as every cast member has plenty to do.
Our children and youth ensemble thoroughly enjoyed performing this show. The language is simple and very true to the classic stories ... accessible to children and delightful for parents!
I first directed this show in the early 1970s as a high-school drama class project. It was wonderfully received. Now retired and working with a summer youth theatre, I recalled it and did it again. The beautiful simplicity of the set and the ability of children to identify with the show's basic theme make this a very rewarding play.
This is such a delightful play ... full of wit and humor. And underneath it all, lessons about friendship, loyalty and responsibility.
Get the actors into their costumes and the space as early as possible--especially Tigger, who has broad movements and may need more practice with blocking than usual.
Adding sound effects enhanced the show...especially bouncing for Tigger ... Rigging things in the fly space to fall from Owl's house was fun and worked well. Simplicity is the key to producing this play. Just be sure to have really grand tree's for the set.
Don't get hung up on making your costumes look like the Disney version of the characters. Be creative and have fun.
Because the story takes place in the Hundred Acre Woods, a place in Christopher Robin's imagination, scenery can be very creative. We chose to create the world of the the play out of simple children's toys.
Keep the set simple with all action focused on the Sitting Stones in the center of the stage. It helps to cast an acrobatic Tigger!!
