Synopsis

The classic fantasy about Bilbo, a young and extremely reluctant Hobbit, who leaves home and sets off with a band of adventurers to slay Smaug the dragon and recover an enormous treasure, discovering the ring in the process. Customer Reviews

This play was received as well as any children's show we have done in the 30-year history of the program. Touring audiences in small towns are hungry for artistic experiences and I was invited to come back with a play every year -- based on our "Hobbit" performance. The timing of this selection with the "Lord of the Rings" movie and Harry Potter books and movie was part of its success with young audiences.

Susan Sutton, Cloud County Community College, Concordia, KS

We produced this show for our teen theatre showcase. It was perfect for our cast of 12. We were able to effectively show scene changes with lights and costumes. Set was minimal. There were great action moments. The audience enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Joel Soukkala, County Seat Theater, Barnum, Minn.

The Hobbit was awesome! We had children from 8 years old to adults performing! The audience loved it, even "true blue" Tolkien fans were amazed!

Christie Kearny, Church at the Center, Seattle, Wash.

The Taylor version of The Hobbit is great for its flexibility. The cast can be as small as 6 or as large as 30 (or even more). The sets and costumes can be as simple or complex as you want. And the familiarity of the story is great for our audiences.

Jeremy Williams, Cook High School, Adel, Ga.

This was the perfect play for our cast needs and size. The character division was helpful for the quick costume changes. Even those who played multiple characters had significant roles.

Vicky Stigen, The Rock Academy, Northfile, Minn.

Hints, Tips, and Tricks

Start working on costumes on DAY ONE! This is a complex, costume-heavy show.

Jeremy Williams, Cook High School, Adel, Ga.

Ideally, try to take advantage of younger/shorter actors for the leads. The characters are small, and my smaller actors usually have to play supporting roles because of their size. They loved having the spotlight for a change.

Jeremy Williams, Cook High School, Adel, Ga.
