Synopsis
Stampeding elephants! Raging typhoons! Runaway trains! Unabashedly slapstick! Hold onto your seats for the original amazing race! Join fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg and his faithful manservant as they race to beat the clock! Phileas Fogg has agreed to an outrageous wager that puts his fortune and his life at risk. With his resourceful servant Passepartout, Fogg sets out to circle the globe in an unheard-of 80 days. But his every step is dogged by a detective who thinks he's a robber on the run. 80 Days is a fun-filled show with a wide variety of colorful characters. The incredible flexibility made it an ideal show when we weren't sure which actors were coming back the next year.
Mark Brown takes a complex tale full of dates, times & places and turns it into a madcap race full of wit & spunk.
It is an exciting challenge for actors as they deal with multiple characters, accents and costume changes in this madcap trip around the world.
This is a great script for a large group. Lots of small roles for less experienced actors.
We had an excellent production. Very well received by our audiences and reviewers.
Around the World is the best script I've produced from Dramatic Publishing. It is funny, well written, and full of action and drama. The cast had lots of fun, and it was very popular with the audience.
We enjoyed performing Around the World in 80 Days. Our high schoolers have performed nine plays over the last nine years and we were told that this was our best play by far. We performed the play with thirteen students performing various parts.
Hints, Tips, and Tricks
Find a clever way to use a unit set. Even small scene changes really slow the show down because there are so many of them. If you’re willing to cast extras at each location, putting them in full costume is a great alternative to changing a set.
This script requires well-crafted physical comedy and sound effects to fill the gaps imagination leaves out.
Use the stage decorations to help you change the sets. For instance, we used a shipping crate (on wheels), fabric from the Chinese docks, and a decorative elephant head to create their elephant ride through India.
Though it can be performed with an actor per role I think it would take away from the appeal. We performed it with 6 people doing 39 parts and wouldn't have done it any other way.
Do keep the set simple and let the antics of the performers hold the audience. For example, manufacturing an elephant is really not required. Simple wooden set pieces (benches & chairs) is all it takes.
