Like Aesop's fables, Wiley and the Hairy Man is drawn from native folk wisdom. "Outwit the Hairy Man three times, and he won't scare you ever again," says Mammy. Trembling, Wiley sets out for the woods, prepared to confront the Hairy Man; he looks fear in the face and outwits it. The adventures are presented in lyric poetry and mime. The actors become the woods, the cabin, and all the props, making Wiley imaginative and easy to mount. A Joseph Jefferson Award winner for outstanding children's play.
This play is such a dynamic piece to perform! It was a great play for my students to dive deep into ensemble and chorus work. While the main characters were awesome in performing their roles, the chorus group really became the lead of our production! ... Both adults and children loved watching our show!
This was a great show to let our students take the lead in imagining the costumes, make-up, choreography, and what the Hairy Man might look and sound like. Including a study of the poetry and cadence, practicing precision and synchronicity was helpful in connecting the nature of the folk tale to the style of presentation.
The script allowed us to be very creative as we worked together in forming the "animals" and amazing chorus "pictures" upon the stage. The great rhythmic language allows you to add special choreography, body movements, and percussion work of your own to enrapture and engage the audience for the entire show. Don't be afraid to really have fun with it!
