Rappaccini's Daughter is a one-act study of romance, mystery and horror. Giovanni, a university student, has rented a room overlooking Dr. Rappaccini's beautiful and mysterious garden. To be found working in that garden is the doctor's equally beautiful and mysterious daughter, Beatrice. Although warned that the two are suspected of creating botanical horrors, Giovanni falls in love with Beatrice, and she with him. The outcome is romantic tragedy.
I'ts most helpful if you read the original short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne for character insights.
