Synopsis

Two years ago, Mika couldn't stand to wait at her mother's deathbed, so she went to the barn to help Mona-the-cow deliver Sticky. Now, Sticky is ready for market. But Mika musters all of her 9-year-old resources to prevent Sticky from being shipped with the rest of the herd. Her relationship with Sticky is revealed in their "conversations" in which Mika, of course, speaks both parts. These conversations have a deep and aching importance to Mika because Sticky's "words" are Mom's, and if Sticky dies, Mom will die again. "A play that will touch people of all ages…an engaging story about a family growing closer while coping with loss and uncertainty." (Surburban Wayne Times, Pa.) "An essay about growing up and how the past can color the present. Part valentine for the rural way of life and part coming-of-age story, it makes its many points with good cheer and a strong work ethic." (Daily Local News, Westchester, Pa.)

Customer Reviews

A rare script to deal so eloquently with farming issues. Beautifully written with wonderful roles for young actors.

Hints, Tips, and Tricks

Sticky is a challenge. To create a puppet that is stylizedÑbut functionalÑand represents a 1300-lb. steer, is very important for this production.

Media Reviews

"York skillfully reveals issues through character, and The Forgiving Harvest tells an engaging story—about a family growing closer while coping with loss and uncertainty—with wit and grace… The Forgiving Harvest exemplifies the Family Discovery Series' philosophy with a story that doesn't preach or condescend, but rather invites us into a fascinating world and reveals its secrets." -Suburban Wayne Times

"There's a warm loping folksiness to The Forgiving Harvest that makes this new family production at the People's Light and Theatre Company a more cerebral alternative to the usual panic and pratfalls of ordinary children's theatre… The Forgiving Harvest is not a breezy entertainment for toddlers: it's an essay about growing up and how the past can color the present Part valentine for the rural way of life and part coming-of-age story, it makes its many points with good cheer and a strong work ethic." -Daily Local News, Westchester
