Joan Ross
Sorkin is a
playwright and lyricist who has created a number of musicals, operas and plays.
Her musicals, which include Dandelion, Isabelle and the Pretty-Ugly
Spell, Go Green!, Black Swan Blues, Imagining Monet, In
the Theatre and The Real McCoy, have been performed at venues like
the Vital Theatre Company, the New York City Children’s Theater and the
National Children’s Theatre Festival. Some of her plays include (mis)Understanding
Mammy: The Hattie McDaniel Story, Dirty Little Secret, Hamlet in
Bensonhurst, The Sacrifice, Hiccup and a Wink, The
Survival Collection and This Is Serious. Her operas include Strange
Fruit, The Reef and White Witch. Recognition for Sorkin’s
works include nominations for the New York Musical Theatre Festival’s
Outstanding New Family-Oriented Musical and TheaterMakers Studio’s Best Play of
the Year. She also was a finalist for the Pellicciotti Prize and was recognized
as an emerging lyricist by York Theatre’s NEO program.
